Description
10 ea. Mary Washington Asparagus Live Plants, 2yr Crowns - Organic Each order contains 10 live Mary Washington 2+ year old plants. Plants are harvested and shipped within one day of order. The crowns should to be planted and kept moist immediately upon arrival. These are excellent asparagus crowns grown in Idaho. The taste is far superior to any store bought asparagus. Once you try a fresh asparagus shoot you will probably eat most of them on your way into the house...before they are even cooked. PLANTING TIMES: FALL is the best time to plant, so the roots have a chance to get established before the hard frosts come. Cover with 4-6 inches of loose straw or grass during the first winter. The plant will start growing early spring and you may get a few spears. SPRING is fine to plant, but you should not harvest any spear until late fall or the following spring. You need to like the roots get established. SUMMER is also fine to plant, you just need to make sure to keep the crowns water so the roots will get established. Do not harvest spears that year, let the ferns grow throughout the summer and fall and cut back to the ground after they turn yellow or have a hard frost. Asparagus is easy to grow and will provide fresh asparagus shoots for ~20 years. These are heirloom asparagus crowns, female plants will produce seeds which can be harvest and planted for additional plants. I cannot guarantee or even determine which of these young plants are male and which are female. For best production, harvest 2-3 times per week before the shoot tip starts to open. I like mine shoots about 8 inches long. Harvest until the shoots become as thin as a pencil. Then let the shoots grow into ferns (~3-4 feet tall when mature). Once the weather turns cold in October, cut the mature fern to the ground in preparation for next falls harvest. Proudly Grown On Star Mountain Ranch. A small Family Operation in the Pristine Mountains of Idaho. Thank you for supporting produce grown in the USA.
